Daisuke (Kana: ダイスケ) was an intern on the Tulpar space freighter under the supervision of the ship's mechanic, Swansea.
Appearance
Daisuke is a tall young man with a tanned complexion, mid-length, dyed middle-parted brown hair, and almond-shaped brown eyes; he has a round face with one mole on each cheek, his right mole being under his eye and his left mole slightly lower. He wears a Pony Express yellow and red ringer tee, a pink hibiscus patterned button-up shirt and blue jeans tucked into black boots. He wears silver rings and a red wristband that matches with his Pony Express T-shirt. Additionally, while obscured by his hair, Daisuke wears silver earrings, having one of the left ear and two on the right ear.[1]
Personality
Daisuke is the most optimistic crew member. He is often enthusiastic about his duties and retains said enthusiasm after the crash. However, despite his peppy exterior, he later in the game drunkenly confesses to Jimmy that he struggles to find meaning in life. He occasionally fantasizes over women and has an affinity for sugar, arcade games[2], and thrifting clothes[3].
He is naive and seeks approval from the other crew members, especially Swansea and Jimmy. He is passionate about helping his crewmates, expressing concern when Anya locks herself in the medbay in Chapter 11. Despite it being dangerous, Daisuke willingly goes into the collapsed vent in the utility room after being manipulated by Jimmy to think that it is safe, and that he would make Swansea proud. He is airheaded and ditzy, and is noted by Swansea to be thick-skulled and a "useless ray of goddamn sunshine". As a result, he expresses a feeling of being useless, as proven by his desire for approval. In grim conversations and situations, Daisuke prefers to remain silent.
History
Biography
Daisuke did not want to be an intern, but his parents insisted, believing it would help motivate him. It was specifically his mother that placed him into the internship; in Chapter 8 he quotes "such a slacker, she said,". When he did end up on the Tulpar last minute, while at first anguished, he decided to put on a brave face and try his best to make his parents proud.[4] He eventually began to bond with his crewmates and was eager to learn, however, he struggled to retain information.
His dialogue suggests he spent his days indulging in partying and getting intoxicated. Jimmy also implied Daisuke seemed to be from a well-off family, claiming "mommy and daddy have him covered."
During Mouthwashing
After the crash, Daisuke remained positive with the situation the crew of the Tulpar found themselves in. He retained a sense of humor, and, at least outwardly, some hope that the crew would return home. He spoke about the possibility of their story winding up in the news when talking to Jimmy in Chapter 2.
Despite the circumstances, Daisuke was still determined to prove himself a worthy member of the crew and, as a result, was very concerned with how he was perceived by them, especially Swansea, whom he trusted more than anyone else. Daisuke's insecurity also meant he was easily manipulated and controlled, which would prove to be his undoing.
Three months after the Tulpar's crash, Anya locked herself in Medical, with Curly still inside. When Jimmy expressed concern regarding both Curly's safety and the crew's access to the remaining medication, Daisuke hesitantly mentioned that it is possible to access Medical through the broken ventilation shaft in Utility, reminding Jimmy repeatedly that Swansea deemed both Utility and the vent off-limits, a further testament to Daisuke's trust and respect for Swansea. Even after Daisuke and Jimmy knocked him out and entered Utility to discover that he had been hiding a working cryostasis pod, Daisuke jumps to Swansea's defense. Jimmy used Daisuke's faith in Swansea to manipulate him into climbing into the vent, with Jimmy telling Daisuke that Swansea would be proud.
Daisuke sustained several severe lacerations and burns all over his body while climbing through the vent, eventually making it to Medical and discovering Anya's body. Even while dying and in excruciating pain, Daisuke apologized to Swansea, who, realizing Daisuke would not survive, Grabbed an Axe and the last Thing Daisuke Heard, Was "Close your Eyes Daisuke" and The axe Sliced his eyes and killed him.
Relationships
Curly
Daisuke had very few interactions with Curly, and their relationship was not as prominent as the latter's was with Jimmy and Anya, however, Curly treated him with respect, and vice versa. After the crash, he expressed care and concern for Curly's frail condition.
Jimmy
Jimmy notably had a less hostile relationship with Daisuke compared to the other crewmates, however, it is likely because he knew Daisuke was easily manipulated. While Daisuke attempted to get along with him, as he did with all the other crew members, Jimmy blatantly disliked Daisuke and saw him as a nuisance who should not have been in their crew. Jimmy also took advantage of Daisuke's naive nature, which led to his demise.
Swansea
Daisuke worked directly under Swansea as an intern. While it is clear Daisuke tried to impress Swansea or exceed his expectations, he often failed, leading to his relationship with Swansea to become somewhat rocky and authoritarian, with Swansea consistently undermining his abilities. Despite this, their final interactions revealed that Swansea admired Daisuke's willingness to try his best, even preferring his bright personality to his own.
Anya
Anya and Daisuke were friends, as they enjoyed playing a board game together, and were said to get competitive. Daisuke panicked when he discovered that she had locked herself in the medical bay in Chapter 11, wanting to rescue her as quickly as possible. Upon his succesful opening of the medical bay's door, he is implied to have witnessed Anya's corpse.
